What are the system requirements for installing the Speedbar?
The Excite Speedbar is currently available for Windows XP, Windows ME, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT 4.0, and Windows 2000. The Excite Speedbar software and cache require only 300k of disk space on the disk drive containing your windows directory (usually the C: drive). If you are currently able to run a supported web browser on your computer, you should be able to install and run the Excite Speedbar. In particular, your web browser and the Excite Speedbar require a 486 or newer, compatible processor, 16 MB of RAM, VGA display (SVGA is recommended), a mouse or similar pointing device, and Internet access.

Does the Excite Speedbar track where I go on the Internet?
The Speedbar does not monitor or report back to Excite with information about where you are traveling when you leave the Excite service (which includes our co-branded sites) or what you do on other Web sites.

Keep in mind that the Speedbar is subject -- in all respects -- to Excite's privacy policy. This means that we will not share any personally identifiable information you provide (whether it comes through the Speedbar or anywhere else) unless you have given us permission to do so.

How can I feel safe knowing the Speedbar is not "spyware"?
The following should help clarify that the Speedbar is NOT spying on you and that we take guarding your privacy seriously.

1) The Speedbar DOES NOT track, collate or aggregate any information about a user when the user is NOT on the Excite service.

2) The Speedbar DOES NOT collect information stored on your user system and DOES NOT upload information from your computer system to Excite.

3) The Speedbar IS subject to Excite's Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.

4) The Speedbar can be uninstalled from the "Add/Remove Programs" Control Panel AND from the Speedbar toolbar itself. In both cases, all of the Speedbar's registry settings that hook the Speedbar into your web browser are deleted. It is also safe to delete the Speedbar's executable code without uninstalling the Speedbar. The Speedbar's executable code is (by default) installed in a sub-directory of "\Program Files\Excite\SpeedBar" on the user's drive containing their Windows directory.

5) Installation of the Speedbar DOES NOT change the signature of any email or newsgroup clients or cause such clients to advertise the Excite service.

6) The Speedbar DOES NOT update itself without telling the user in advance and asking for authorization.

Our intention was to build a toolbar that would be of value to our members by providing easy access to Excite's features, content and search functionality. At the same time, we take the privacy concerns of our members seriously and we have tried to design the Speedbar out of respect for these concerns. We believe that we have succeeded and will continue to work on improving the Speedbar with these concerns in mind.

I installed the Speedbar, but it does not appear. Why?
The Speedbar may be hidden. If you have Internet Explorer, do the following to unhide the Speedbar:

1) Go to the "View" menu at the top of your browser
2) Select "Toolbars"
3) Click "Excite Speedbar" to unhide the Speedbar

Microsoft has reported a significant bug with versions of Internet Explorer between 5.0.0.0 and 5.00.2919.0. If your Internet Explorer version number is within this range and your computer's operating system is Windows NT or Windows 2000, you should upgrade to the latest version of Internet Explorer. The bug in these versions may prevent you from successfully using the Excite Speedbar.

To find out what version of Internet Explorer you have, go to the Help menu located at the top of your browser. Select "About Internet Explorer." A box will appear that tells you what version you have.

If at some point you uninstalled the Excite Speedbar, and you are using a Microsoft browser, you may experience difficulty seeing it right away if you attempt to re-install it. The easiest way to make the Speedbar reappear is to close and restart your Web browser.
