Excite Email Notifier FAQ's

What is the Excite Email Notifier?
Now you can find out when you have a new Excite email message, regardless of where you are on the Web. (And if you have an "always on" Internet connection, you can be alerted to new messages without even having a browser window open.) The Excite Email Notifier alerts you to new messages using fun animated characters that tell you when you've got new Excite email messages.

NOTE: By downloading the free Excite Email Notifier, you also get access to Excite Private Messenger - our own instant messenger tool.

How do I get the Excite Email Notifier?
Easy! Click here to download the Excite Email Notifier – it's easy, it only takes a couple of minutes, and it's free!

NOTE: Excite Email Notifier is only compatible with Windows.

Once my Excite Email Notifier software has been installed, how do I begin using it?
Once you download the Excite Email Notifier, you will be taken through a brief Setup Process. This will allow you to properly install the Email Notifier on your computer and select which notifiers you would like to alert you to new messages.

Upon completion of the Setup Process, a small Excite Community Tools icon (icon image here) will appear in your systray - located in the bottom-right corner of your screen (to the left of your computer's clock). That's it! The Excite Email Notifier is now working.

Remember, you can right-click on the Excite Community Tools icon at any time while you're online to start or stop the Notifier, or to access the Excite Private Messenger.

Tip: If you would prefer that the Excite Email Notifier not activate as soon as you go online, right-click on the Excite Community Tools icon, choose "Select Email Notifier" and uncheck the "Launch Email Notifier when Windows starts" box within the Email Notifier Select window. You can manually start the Excite Email Notifier at any time by double-clicking the Excite Notifier desktop icon.

How many animated characters (notifiers) do I have to choose from?
Choose up to 10 animated notifiers – from a way-cool surfer dude ... to a dog happily wagging his tail ... to a Kung Fu expert. Each time you receive a new email, a notifier from your personal list will randomly be selected to alert you that you have a new message.

Rather than select animated notifiers, you can also choose a simple Alert Dialog box that will appear whenever you have a new message waiting in your inbox. The Alert Dialog notifier does not include sounds.

Can I set up the Excite Email Notifier to check more than one Excite email address?
No, the Excite Email Notifier will alert you to new messages associated with only one Excite email account.

How does the Excite Email Notifier work?
When a new message arrives in your Excite inbox, one of the animated notifiers you have selected will appear on your screen and let you know – each in its own way – that you have received a new email message. (The surfer dude notifier, for example, will surf out onto your screen and say, "Dude, like you totally got mail.")

Once you have been alerted to your new message, right-click on the notifier. A menu will pop-up with the following options:
  • Preview [1] new message - This option allows you to 1) learn who sent the new message and at what time, and 2) read the beginning of the message's subject line. This way, you can determine whether or not you wish to open the email immediately. The five most recent messages in your inbox will appear in this preview screen.
  • Open Mail – Skip the preview screen and immediately go to your email inbox. You must be signed in to your account to go to your inbox directly. (Click here to learn more about Prompt for Password.)
  • Select a notifier –Add or remove other notifiers to alert you to future messages. You have plenty of notifiers to choose from, including an opera singer, robot, dog, maid, kung fu expert and more.
  • Exit – This closes you out of the Excite Email Notifier completely.
  • Hide notifier – Allow your notifier to disappear from your desktop until such time as you receive another new message.
You can also double-click on your notifier once it appears to go directly to your email inbox. This will also hide your notifier.

NOTE: You must be online for the notifier to appear, but you do not need to have a Web browser open.

Once my Excite Email Notifier software has been installed, how do I begin using it?
The Excite Email Notifier works automatically. The first time you go online after downloading the software, a small "Excite Email Notifier - Sign In" box will pop-up, prompting you for your Excite Username and Password. Once you've entered this information, a small Excite icon will appear in the bottom-right corner of your screen (to the left of your computer's clock.) Right-click on the icon and choose "Select Email Notifier" to pick which notifiers you would like to alert you to new messages. That's it! The Excite Email Notifier is now working. Send yourself an email to try it out!

If you would prefer that the Excite Email Notifier does not activate as soon as you go online, right-click on the Excite icon in the bottom-right corner of your screen, choose "Select Email Notifier" and uncheck the "Launch Email Notifier when Windows starts" box within the Email Notifier Select window.

My notifier remains on my computer screen even after it has told me I have new email. Now what?
Once your notifier has alerted you to a new message on your screen, you have the choice to keep it on your screen or to hide it.

If you choose to keep your notifier on your screen (why not - they're cool!), you have the ability to click and drag your notifier anywhere on your desktop. Your notifier is well-behaved: it will remain motionless and quiet on your screen until such time as you receive a new message. Then it will briefly spring to action and tell you that have received a new email.

If you wish to hide your notifier from your screen, just right-click on the notifier and select "Hide notifier." This will allow your notifier to disappear from your desktop until such time as you receive another new message.

What if I receive another new message while a notifier is already on my screen?
If you receive a second (third, fourth, fifth…) new message while your notifier is already on your screen, your notifier will briefly spring to action and alert you that you now have more new email.

You can preview preview the 5 most recent messages in your inbox by right-clicking the notifier and selecting "Preview [1] new message." This will allow you to see the sender(s) of the email(s), as well as each message's subject line and the time received.

I've installed the Excite Email Notifier software and now there is an Excite icon in the bottom-right corner of my computer screen. Why?
This icon gives you instant access to your Excite Community Tools. From here you can connect to Excite Private Messenger, sign in and out of the Excite Email Notifier, select a new notifier, turn off the notifier and more.

How do I add, remove or switch email notifiers?
You can add, remove or switch to a new notifier at any time by right-clicking the Excite icon found in the bottom-right corner of your screen, choosing "Select Email Notifier" and then checking (or un-checking) the box next to any notifier(s) in the Email Notifier Select pop-up. (You can preview any of the notifiers in the left-column box by clicking on that notifier's name. The preview will appear at right.)

How do I move the Excite Email Notifier to a different part of my screen?
Just left-click on your notifier and drag it anywhere on your desktop. Your notifier is well-behaved: it will remain motionless and quiet on your screen until such time as you receive a new message. Then it will briefly spring to action and tell you that have received a new email.

Is there a way to control the volume for the Excite Email Notifier? Is there an on/off Mute button?
At this time, there is no separate volume control for the Excite Notifier. You can, of course, control the notifier's volume by adjusting the volume of your computer. To mute a notifier, you will need to turn off/mute your computer's sound output. We hope to introduce a volume control for notifiers in the future.

You can also choose the simple Alert Dialog notifier – it has no sound and is ideal if you want a basic alert.

How do I "uninstall" the Excite Email Notifier?
You can easily uninstall the Excite Email Notifier using the instructions below:
  • Close all open Web browsers
  • From the "Start" menu in Windows, select "Control Panel"
  • Select "Add/Remove Programs"
  • Select "Community Tools - Excite"
  • Click "Change/Remove"
Then, just follow the simple instructions and the Excite Email Notifier will be uninstalled. You may need to restart your computer for the uninstall process to be completed.

Can I choose when to start the Excite Email Notifier, rather than it starting automatically when Windows opens?
Yes, you can choose when to start the Excite Email Notifier manually. To no longer have the Email Notifier start automatically when Windows opens, just do the following:
  • Right-click on the Excite icon in the bottom-right corner of your screen
  • Click "Select Email Notifier" to open the Email Notifier Select box
  • Uncheck the box that says "Launch Email Notifier when Windows starts"
  • Click "OK"
The next time you turn on your computer, the Excite icon will appear in the bottom-right corner with a small "X" next to it. To launch the Excite Email Notifier manually, just click on the icon and select the "Start Email Notifier" option. You will be asked for your Excite Username and Password before the Email Notifier launches.

Can I temporarily disable, or turn off the Excite Email Notifier, if I do not wish to be alerted to any new mail today?
Yes! Just click the Excite icon in the bottom-right corner of your computer screen and select the "Stop Email Notifier" option. This will turn off the Email Notifier for the remainder of your online session. (You can always turn the Email Notifier back on by clicking the same Excite icon - which will now have a small "X" next to it - and selecting the "Start Email Notifier" option.)
